One of the World’s Greatest Travellers — Carved by Hand, Painted in Golden Speckle, Black, and White

The Pacific Golden Plover is one of the most extraordinary birds on Earth. Each year, it completes one of the longest non-stop migratory flights of any bird — flying from its Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding grounds in Alaska and Siberia across the open Pacific Ocean to its wintering grounds in Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The crossing from Alaska to Hawaii alone covers more than 4,800 kilometres of open water — flown non-stop, without rest, in approximately three days. The bird that lands on a Hawaiian beach in August left Alaska just 72 hours earlier. At 4.5 inches, this hand-carved, hand-painted basswood figurine captures the Pacific Golden Plover in its stunning breeding plumage — the intricate golden-speckled upperparts, bold black face and breast, and clean white supercilium — mounted on a solid Black Walnut base for a refined, gallery-worthy display piece.

Every figurine is carved and painted entirely by hand — no molds, no shortcuts. Just skilled craftsmanship and genuine appreciation for one of the world’s most remarkable long-distance migrants.

✦ The Story Behind the Piece

The Pacific Golden Plover’s migration is one of the most astonishing feats of navigation in the animal kingdom. Flying at altitudes of up to 6,000 metres, at speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour, the bird crosses thousands of kilometres of featureless open ocean using a combination of the sun, the stars, the Earth’s magnetic field, and infrasound — low-frequency sound waves produced by ocean waves that the bird can detect and use as a navigational reference even when flying above the clouds. In Hawaii, where the Kōlō arrives each August and departs each April, it has been part of the cultural landscape for over a thousand years. Ancient Hawaiians observed its arrival and departure as a marker of the seasons. It appears in Hawaiian chants and proverbs. It is one of the few migratory birds in the world that returns to exactly the same wintering territory — the same garden, the same lawn, the same patch of shoreline — year after year, sometimes for a decade or more. Scientists have tracked individual birds returning to the same square metre of Hawaiian turf for over ten consecutive years. This figurine is made for everyone who has watched a Golden Plover land on a Hawaiian beach or an Australian mudflat and felt the full weight of the journey it has just completed. A bird of open oceans and ancient skies, held in wood.
