Flying at altitudes of up to 6,000 metres, at speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour, the bird crosses thousands of kilometres of featureless open ocean using a combination of the sun, the stars, the Earth’s magnetic field, and infrasound — low-frequency sound waves produced by ocean waves that the bird can detect and use as a navigational reference even when flying above the clouds. In Hawaii, where the Kōlō arrives each August and departs each April, it has been part of the cultural landscape for over a thousand years. Ancient Hawaiians observed its arrival and departure as a marker of the seasons. It appears in Hawaiian chants and proverbs.
