Europe’s Most Flamboyant Forest Bird — Carved by Hand, Painted in Pink, Black, White, and Electric Blue
The Eurasian Jay is one of Europe’s most visually spectacular birds — and one of its most intelligent. Its plumage is a riot of colour that seems almost designed to surprise: warm pinkish-brown body, bold black moustache stripe, white rump that flashes in flight, and those extraordinary electric-blue wing patches, barred with black, that look as though they belong on a tropical bird rather than a woodland crow. At 4.5 inches, this is one of the most striking figurines in the Wooden Islands collection, capturing the Jay’s alert, upright posture and extraordinary multi-toned plumage in remarkable artisan detail. Mounted on a solid Black Walnut base, it is a bold, colourful statement piece that brings the drama and intelligence of the European forest into any home.
Every figurine is carved and painted entirely by hand — no molds, no shortcuts. Just skilled craftsmanship and genuine appreciation for one of Europe’s most charismatic and ecologically important birds.

✦ The Story Behind the Piece
The Eurasian Jay is, in ecological terms, one of the most important birds in Europe. Each autumn, a single Jay will bury up to 5,000 acorns — caching them across its territory to retrieve through winter. It remembers the location of thousands of these caches with extraordinary precision. But it doesn’t retrieve them all. The acorns it forgets become oak trees. The Jay, in other words, is one of the primary architects of the European oak forest — a bird that has been planting trees for millions of years, long before humans thought to do the same. It is also one of the few birds known to plan for the future, to deceive rivals, and to understand what other individuals can and cannot see — cognitive abilities once thought to be uniquely human. This figurine is made for everyone who has watched a Jay vanish into the oaks and felt, rightly, that they were in the presence of something remarkable. A forest architect, held in wood.
