The World’s Most Distinctive Domestic Duck — Carved by Hand, Painted in Bold Black, White, and Red

The Muscovy Duck is unlike any other duck in the world. It is not descended from the Mallard — the ancestor of almost every other domestic duck breed — but from a separate wild lineage native to Central and South America, domesticated independently thousands of years ago. The male is a striking, substantial bird: bold black-and-white plumage, a broad flat body, and that extraordinary red caruncled face — the fleshy, warty red mask that makes the Muscovy instantly recognisable and utterly unlike anything else in the waterfowl world. At 5 inches tall, this hand-carved, hand-painted basswood figurine captures the Muscovy’s distinctive silhouette, bold plumage contrast, and characterful face in remarkable artisan detail. It is a substantial, characterful piece that brings the personality and presence of one of the world’s most unusual birds into any home.

Every figurine is carved and painted entirely by hand — no molds, no shortcuts. Just skilled craftsmanship and genuine appreciation for one of the world’s most distinctive and historically significant domesticated birds.

✦ The Story Behind the Piece

The Muscovy Duck has one of the most unusual histories of any domesticated animal. It was first domesticated by indigenous peoples of Central and South America — possibly as long as 3,000 years ago — long before European contact. When Spanish conquistadors arrived in the Americas in the 16th century, they found Muscovy Ducks already living alongside humans across a vast area from Mexico to Peru. They brought them back to Europe, where the breed spread rapidly and became one of the most widely kept domestic ducks on the continent. Despite its name, the Muscovy has no connection to Moscow or Russia — the origin of the name remains disputed, with theories ranging from a corruption of “Musk Duck” (for the musky scent glands of the male) to a reference to the Muisca people of Colombia. Today, feral Muscovy populations have established themselves across the southern United States, Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe — making this South American bird one of the most globally widespread of all waterfowl. This figurine is made for everyone who has ever stopped to look properly at a Muscovy and realised, perhaps for the first time, just how extraordinary and ancient a bird it is. A duck of conquistadors and homesteads, held in wood.
